In 2019, a union of visionaries within the legal services field took place. About three decades before that occurrence, Andrew Spingler, Scott Hilton, and Chris Ritter were busy founding the trial consulting firm, The Focal Point, while Bill Wein and others were creating, IMS, a company that would go on to supply litigators with leading expert witnesses from around the globe. After creating and building industry leading enterprises in their own right, the two groups realized that, together, they had could provide Am Law 200 clients with a much wider array of legal services from the beginning to the end of trial. IMS acquired The Focal Point, and today the company has become IMS Legal Strategies, the premier provider of integrated strategy, expert witness, jury consulting, graphic design, and trial presentation services in the United States.
Andrew Spingler, Senior Strategy Advisor, has been creating clear and sophisticated visual strategies for clients since the nascent “desktop publishing” days. He pioneered the collaborative creative process, the same process that is alive at IMS today, to evaluate and simplify courtroom presentations for the country’s most sophisticated trial lawyers. He and his strategy team excel at transforming complex cases into courtroom presentations that are understandable and engaging for juries. In addition to design and communication consulting, Andy’s practice includes case analysis and strategy development, mock trial and focus group research, and jury selection. He is an overall leader at IMS and an attentive mentor for the members of the integrated strategy team.
Andy has provided trial consulting services in hundreds of cases, including the In re Deepwater Horizon litigation; United States v. AT&T, Inc.; Colorado v. Kobe Bean Bryant; and for the prosecution in State of California v. Scott Peterson. He was a member of the plaintiff’s patent trial team in University of California v. Genentech, a case which achieved one of the largest settlements ever in a matter involving DNA coding for human growth hormone. In addition, Andy has been a speaker on the subject of visual communication in the courtroom for the ABA, California Continuing Education of the Bar (CEB), the California Judges Association, and numerous multinational law firms.
Andy is a CPA and holds a BA in business economics from the University of California at Santa Barbara. He lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with his wife Linda and has three grown children. When not working, he enjoys fly fishing, skiing, road bike riding and scuba diving.
